Makin Furniture

The 4th Makin Furniture exhibition, promoted and curated by Steve Makin, closes February 25th, 2006, after a 40-day run at the Chandler Center for the Arts. Featuring the work of 15 (or so) Arizona woodworkers, including several WSG members, this is one of few show venues for this kind of work in Arizona. The opening in January was well-attended by artists, friends, and interested patrons and observers. According to Steve, 3 pieces were sold (not all the work shown was for sale).

Steve puts a lot of work into making these shows happen, and we all owe him our thanks.

Comments on the show are welcome here (click on the “comments” link below). Also, if anyone has a few digital images of the show, send them as email attachments to info@woodsplinter.com and they’ll be posted here.

February 2006 Meeting

Late breaking news - a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, February 28th, 7:00pm, at Bernie Becker’s shop:

Bernie and Doug Forsha will do a demo/presentation about honeycomb core torsion box construction. This is a technique that utilizes resin-impregnated cardboard honeycomb material, faced with 1/4″ MDF or other sheet stock as a substrate for veneer. The resulting panels are super-strong and, relative to similar construction using solid MDF, super-lightweight.

One of the main suppliers of lightweight honeycomb material is Tricel Corporation, and you’ll find the Tricel web site loaded with information and specifications regarding this stuff. You can also have free samples delivered to your door.

Refreshments will be served at the meeting, as usual.
