Group Projects & Design Challenges

Who’s Your Daddy? - this is similar to a project we have done twice in the past. One maker starts a piece and passes it on to another, who in turn adds/subtracts/modifies the piece according to his or her lights before sending it on to the next maker. Ideally the piece is in production for 12 months, each maker having 1 month to do their thing. The piece, in it’s various stages, changes hand at the monthly meetings so that everyone can see the progress. At the end of the 12 months, the piece will be auctioned to the highest bidder (proceeds go to the WSG kitty).

Doug Forsha volunteered to start the piece following the January meeting. He will pass it to Steve Makin at the February meeting. Successive maker’s names will be drawn from a pool of volunteers monthly.

Simple Chairs - Makers must design and fabricate a “seating object” using a piece of 3/4″  MDF 48″ square (1/2 sheet). Fasteners are allowed (screws, KD fittings, etc), but no hardware (brackets, braces, etc). Glue is allowed. Pieces can be permanently assembled or knock-down. Any finish is OK. No other materials allowed. Drawing must be provided showing how component parts can be gotten out of a single sheet of material. Assembled piece must be able to support an average person. Everyone is encourage to give this a shot. The pieces must be finished by the May meeting.

TSA Examiners Challenge Cup - The idea here is to build a piece of furniture that can be knocked down into a small enough volume that it can be taken on an airplane as a piece of carry-on luggage (the legal kind, not what you usually see on airplanes). 22″ x 14″ x 9″ is the accepted industry standard.

Otherwise, the piece may be made of any materials, and be in any style and for any purpose. More information about this project will be posted here when available.
